From Iceland to Greenland

50 minutes by car from Torshavn. Mr. Enomoto (67) (27 years living in the Faroe Islands) complains of abnormal weather in the port town of Best Manda without rain for the past three months. 75% of the income is tax. Hospitals and schools are free, but Enomoto says that those who can work well will seek work overseas after leaving the Island.

Faroe Islands

Greenland is the largest Island in the world. 80% of the area is an ice sheet. South Greenland at 61 degrees north latitude is right next to the Arctic Circle (90% of the land is in the Arctic Circle). I visited the Faroe Islands while visiting the Islands. 250 days of the year is the rainy capital "Torshavn" July 29, 2009 is "St. Olav Day" (peace and ethnic prayer), which is also a holiday on National Day 28 and 29.

Young people drink whiskey with a trumpet and raise a loud voice, and it is dangerous and cannot be photographed. When I can't sleep at night, my traveling companions are confused. Insomnia continues due to the sound of music. By the way, the cabin from Copenhagen to the Faroe Islands is famous for "Flying BAR".

A (turf) house with grass on the roof. Very cute and colorful townscape. Clouds hang low to the middle of the mountain, and sheep eat grass. The sun comes out when I think that the mountains like the sea of clouds continued. I heard that there was a lot of rain and wind, but the weather was blessed. Visit the intricate Fjord and talk to the villagers.

An Island with abundant pasture in nature is an environment where sheep (60,000) over the population grow. After leaving the Faroe Islands, which can be transformed, head to South Greenland. To Narsarsuaq via Reykjavik.

Prologue

One of my traveling companions received 4 small bottles of wine and 6 glasses of whiskey. That day I remembered that he was messing around with fellow sightseeing all day long. On the 30th day after dawn, he returned to the nature of the original fellow, but his memory was lost for only one day. (Hide your name for honor).

It feels very inconvenient for travelers. The annual festival is held in a solemn history of the people, but after that the "turmoil" continues until early morning. Drunks parade through the town until dawn, and the ambulance sirens never stop ringing.

The temperature on July 31, 2009 was also 18 degrees Celsius, and it was cold in the morning and evening. I experienced 5 to 10 degrees. A large ice block will flow from around June. At the beginning of August, it will become a moderately sized ice object and show a blue glow. The "iceberg cruise" that takes you on a wooden boat between the ice is very exciting and romantic.

The world's largest "ice land", "Greenland" was named the green land. It is said that the maximum temperature of 18 degrees Celsius continued in the summer around 1000 AD and it was suitable for farming. 1000 years later.

South Greenland, Narsarsuaq (population 4000). The small Reykjavik airport is crowded with people. Airport staff insist that it is okay to have only 5, 6 baggage vouchers. Atlanta Airlines, 30 minutes late, goes one way "to the biggest Island in the world" "Inuit" that is very similar to Japanese people 4000 years of history still continues.

There is a record of a polar bear (polar bear) on the ice ground in the middle of winter 10 years ago, but even that figure has disappeared now. Due to the effects of global warming, a large number of icebergs float from north to south in the Danish Strait that lies in Iceland and Greenland.

However, a horde of countless mosquitoes was welcomed by a difficult enemy. The mosquito repellent net that I had prepared comes into play. From the encounter of admiration and surprise to the ice sculptures flowing through the glaciers of nature, the beginning of the journey to South Greenland.

The indigenous people's pure blood, which looks a lot like the Japanese, has faded and is associated with all ethnic groups. The US Air Force dormitory has been converted into a hotel and is a base for many tourists. Six of us were the first Japanese to visit in 2009. Mr. and Mrs. Furuya, a friend of 50 years. My brother-in-law, Kazuo Hayashi and his wife.

An Inuit private house that was taken care of on the Island of Shishmaref in Alaska. I feel like asking a distant relative for some reason. 80% of the land is ice land. An iceberg floats in front of the hotel. "Ice Park" where expectations are rising for iceberg cruises.

With a martini in hand, no one says "Cheers". The guide, Steen, once again said "Squall" in the Danish style. A martini on the rocks with a sweet throat. It's like a scene from a movie. A blissful moment turns into a satisfying smile. A very happy face.

An iceberg cruise with a day tour from Narsarsuaq. The time will come when many Japanese tourists will come. A bite of icebergs and drift ice. Iceberg-fresh water (small ice or ice block) Drift ice-seawater (frozen seawater).

Everything is the first experience in a superb view. Blue ice will never go unnoticed. Change to a speedboat on an Island on the way to the town of Narsarsuaq (population 1800) Red, blue, yellow and colorful houses line up. It is also interesting that red is painted separately from (store) yellow (hospital) green (engineer).

If you think about something, the staff is scooping a small ice block with a net. Ice like a diamond. Martini and whiskey are poured over the ice block. Listen to the crackling and popping sounds of ice awakened from hundreds of years of sleep.

I want to believe in the Indian and integration theory that it has traveled to the Americas. I often saw black-haired Indians in a Western movie that I loved when I was young. I want to believe in the memory of being an Inuit.

Take an iceberg cruise to the town of Berserk (1800 people). 10 minutes by boat to the Island opposite Narsarsuaq. The village of Cashiak is where the red-haired Eric (the master of the Vikings) first arrived from Iceland. I visited the site of Viking's residence, but what I was worried about was the camera facing the iceberg floating in front of me.

After the residence of the Vikings

There are countless icebergs that I have never seen before. The sky is clear and blue, and the shining sun helps to light up. A trip blessed with everything. Wonderful, wonderful. Then suddenly "bang" The ship stops at the end of the iceberg.

Immediately after living in the Vikings, change to a wooden ship and break into the ice. Blue icebergs appear one after another within reach. A sculpture created by nature shining in the light. The sound of the shutters of the three cameramen does not stop.

It is a famous story that Eric, a redhead, suddenly disappeared from history 500 years after he moved to this area (early 15th century). There are theories that the clan starved to death due to cooling, plague, returned to Iceland, and emigrated to the Americas.

One hour by charter boat from Narsarsuaq to Qaqortoq. The boat heads for the glacier and speeds up. An ice object different from yesterday shines blue today as well. It appears and disappears in the distance and near, and changes one after another.

Coffee time with excitement. Hot coffee is delicious for a cold body. But there may have been some people who didn't like the taste of coffee. Thank you for the best timing for the cameraman. A cameraman standing on a glacier in Greenland. (As I learned later, one of his companions had a stomachache, so he was in the shadow of a rocky place.

The best shot for many years of dreams. Speaking of greed, the position to stand on the subject was too close. Some of my friends were surprised by the sound and slipped back. It seems that I was the only one looking into the lens at that moment.

Landing on an iceberg for exploration

Around 800m Height 95m

I was surprised and stepped back and walked carefully on the rocks. Carrying three cameras and looking into the lens from left to right, "It's amazing" At that time, the tip of the glacier collapsed over several tens of meters with the signal of a loud echo. Luckily I was holding the camera and kept pushing the shutter in a row.

The long-awaited glacier is on the way. The boat berths and lands on the glacier. The tip of the glacier is said to have receded 100m from 10 years ago. A mysterious glacier that is about to be swallowed. When I approached to touch it, the guide shouted "dangerous".

Waterfalls flow from the huge ice block. It was too big to fit in a wide-angle lens, and I was finally able to take a panoramic view with a fisheye lens. I can't afford to wonder why such a huge ice is flowing.

I found a big iceberg ahead. I think it's about 20 to 30 meters wide and bring the boat closer. One week on the iceberg for the captain to measure the size. As you get closer, you can see that the size of the ice block is tremendous. The part that exposes 800m a week is 15m, and the part under the sea is 80m.

The adrenaline goes up and I'm excited. Dynamic blue ice that changes every day. Dark blue and milky white in the wilderness are live ice concerts that create illusions. An iceberg floating on a calm ocean. Just the right size is perfect for a subject.

Qaqortoq

A quiet fishing port lined with colorfully painted houses on a cliff is the administrative center of Greenland. I like the hotel right in front of the harbor, because this is the small town. The clean room has a double bed, but just having a shower room gives a feeling of luxury.

The fog slowly disappears in the tranquility without a single noise. A cute house with red, blue, and yellow that makes you look into your face vaguely. The Island is still asleep. The attraction of the Island is this moment. "Greenland", an Island in the far north that cannot be tasted in Osaka.

I can't imagine that it will be -40 degrees in winter. Even in the summer, there is a cold air of 6 degrees in the early morning. The Islanders who go on the road are very similar to the Japanese who look good with black hair. The distant ancestors may have been the same. The people who greet each other feel familiar as if they were of the same race.

The port town where children play ball is lively with the population increasing year by year. Early morning is surrounded by fog and welcomes a romantic morning. A fantasy world where the sunny weather is like a lie. Looking through my eyes, a pure white iceberg is floating in the fog.

Recently opened Thai restaurant. However, there are only two restaurants, here and the hotel. Tom Yum Kung, an Asian food after a long absence, stimulates the tongue at a popular prosperous store. An unexpected taste encounter tonight.

Epilogue

Super large drift ice

Suddenly, when I looked at the soup plate, there was one exception, and there was a person who had finished eating before I knew it. That person's name is Morio Furuya. Delicious, he said it was delicious. He is surprised even at Kotetsu, who eats everything.

The friendly Inuit live in a colorful house surrounded by many families. Find a dinner tour (4000 yen) made by the Islanders and visit the house of Mr. Crudos (70 years old) with the guidance of the Island guide. The interior is lined with tasteful handicrafts and rare tableware.

I found a little green land in the land of ice and often named it "Greenland". Floating ice objects change every day, and tomorrow I will never meet the same iceberg again. Visit the historic sites of the Vikings and trace the history of 4000 years.

Dessert is a rare dish. Prunes and raisins with gelatin. The gem of moderate sweetness is eaten by everyone in no time. Regardless of the taste, I am grateful to be able to visit Inuit's house. Their grandson, Abucha (1 year old), welcomes us with a charm.

Each person has different tastes. A person who says a little, a person who says it is delicious. Nobody touched the bloody soup. Animal nutrition may be needed to survive the frigid winter.

Dinner is oven-baked seals and their soup. Since I ate the meat in Alaska a couple of years ago, I have avoided it because of its strong and unique smell. I ate a little but didn't tell others that it was "seal meat".

Yoshimasa Ikeuchi, the Tetsujin of Travel

Kotetsu's one word

The iceberg I saw for the first time in my life, a cruise on Fjord is like a dream world. It was a memorable and moving scene that I met at the moment when the glacier collapsed.

Children's voices echo in the port town of the midnight sun even after 10 o'clock for a walk after a meal. Everything is roughly and rough. The place where you don't get too busy on the Island may be the way to enjoy your trip.

The wives are full of joy with the handmade bead accessories they received as souvenirs. The trip to Greenland filled the hearts of travelers more than I expected. The national flower Nipia Chic blooms pretty, and the setting sun shines colorful houses.

The protagonists of the short summer after the frigid winter are the buttercups and marguerites that bloom on the roadside and the dandelions. The iceberg comes to the entrance of the harbor. The picturesque real world. People living in the polar regions are not surprised at the double price of Japan.
