Sunday market

The third largest Island in the world. It is a little smaller than Japan by about 10%. Development is progressing in recent years, but it is slow compared to other tourist spots in Asia. The state of Sabah in Kota Kinabalu (KK) that I visited is far from the image of an Island with buildings lined up along the beach for 1km from north to south.

Folk crafts

Development is also conspicuous in the center of the town, and development is steadily progressing in hotels under construction and inland areas. Speaking of Borneo, orangutans. I was thinking that I could meet them if I went to the nearby forest. It takes two hours by car to reach the rainforest. The concrete jungle spreads out in the town, and traffic jams continue when commuting.

On the other hand, if you go to rural areas, water-dwellers and indigenous peoples also live there. Children feel free to talk to me. Japan is a beautiful country. Do you like Malaysia? What do you think? Questions come flying one after another. They are familiar people.

Tourism Malaysia is also focusing on PR for tourists from all over the world. Orangutans living in the rich natural forest of Borneo and "proboscis monkeys" with large hanging noses are in danger of extinction due to the expansion of modernization.

The language is similar to Okinawan culture, and I feel the same roots as Japanese people. The economy and culture are a mixture of old and new, which seems to support the economy. 70, yen canned beer at a restaurant is 240 yen at a supermarket, and the town is booming, incorporating an economic society that makes you want to tilt your head.

The forests of the world are the same everywhere in the establishment of national parks and reserves. What kind of encounter is waiting for you? Kota Kinabalu (commonly known as KK), the capital of Sabah, was newly built in 2008 and is still expanding.

Sunday market

The highlight is the world heritage "Kinabalu Park". Rafflesia, the largest flower in the world, can be seen if you are lucky. You rarely see this flower. Most of the Island has a tropical rainforest jungle and is a treasure trove of state-owned flora and fauna. Although modernized, it still has its own indigenous culture.

I look into the viewfinder to capture its magnificence in the camera, but I can't capture the mountains of nature. The cool air makes me feel the atmosphere of the mountains. I can‘t see the brave figure from the observatory.

At least to the foot of the mountain (1580m) and drive through the gate, nature maintenance fee (RM15, 450 yen) Arrived at the destination paying Malaysian (RM5). From here to the summit, it seems that one night (a mountain hut at the 3200m point) is aimed at a barren rock surface, but such a healthy leg is a long time ago.

When I was walking with my camera, A local Chinese tells me that if you want to take a picture, you can walk the 4km promenade or "Mashiura" (40 minutes by car). Of course, choose the latter and run in the direction opposite to the direction you came by car.

I saw the signboard of the landmark Mashiura Golf Course. When I was looking for the best position, I suddenly stood on the 10th tee ground of the golf course. Fortunately, I can't even see the golf cart.

95km from the city (2 hours by car) Take a taxi booked early in the morning to Kotetsu and Mt. Kinabalu. The road is paved and Japanese cars are active. The car speeds up smoothly and heads for the destination.

The sea of clouds and alpine plants endemic to Borneo seen from the top can be taken by taxi and "immediately photographed". The guidebook says that the real thrill of Kinabalu Park is to discover it by trekking. I shouldn't travel lazily.

The course manager will allow you to enter comfortably. Unfortunately, the summit of Mt. Kinabalu is covered with clouds and does not show the whole view. At the very least, I will comfort myself by looking at the pictures in the library.

 Malaysia Borneo (65th island)

Water Bajau 500 houses, 2000 people fishing, 40km north of KK city. A water race on a tributary of the Menkabong River. The river covered with mangroves and flowing quietly feels like Iriomote Island in Okinawa. A stilt house with stakes driven into the river.

Ethnic groups living in the fishing industry sell fish caught by children in both hands along the roads of the village. I've seen newspaper and cigarette sellers, but it's rare to sell fish by hand. When I pointed the camera, the children ran away all at once. There are many illegal immigrants living in this area, so it seems that they misunderstood it as a crackdown. I'm sorry to disturb the business.

This is lucky "Where is the bride?" But the atmosphere is different. "What is the groom's father?" A nearby person with a mysterious look said, "Today is a funeral." We hurriedly left the place. The camera lens was still capped so I didn't have to be rude.

Dusun people. Visited the acquaintance's house (Dusun tribe) of Mr. Sakamoto who lives in Kota Kinabalu. There is a custom that anyone can freely participate in a wedding ceremony on the island. Cars are parked on the side of the passing road. “Because it's a wedding, let's stop by,” says Sakamoto (34).

The indoors are kept clean and the laundry is always dry. It is fully equipped with electric water, but is scheduled to move to a government-supplied building in 2009 on the land next door. "Chample" (mixed) in the Okinawan dialect has the same pronunciation here. I was surprised that "Aramaa" is also a synonym. I feel the roots of the southern people that humankind has walked through.

Jungle Cruise

Nowhere is it hot during the day and doing farm work. Well, let's go leisurely. After noon, I made a detour to a small town and added noodles to my stomach. There are cynomolgus monkeys and cute goats along the road. 110km from KK (3 hours by car) Arrival at 2:00 pm. Mr. Lin, who is the guide, seems uneasy that it is the first time to cruise two hours earlier than usual. (Proboscis monkeys do not approach the river during the day).

Lin, a Chinese, is arranging tours for individual guests on the Internet. The tour that normally starts in the evening is changed to 11 o'clock departure, and it is expected to shoot the rural scenery on the way. Proboscis monkeys seem to come near the river in the evening in search of food.

If the sound of the engine suddenly echoes in the quietly flowing river, it is natural that it will fly away and escape. Even from a distance, I was very impressed to be able to observe the ecology of the proboscis monkey in the jungle of Borneo. Luoyang seen on the way back dyed the sea bright red.

The right hand that pushes the shutter is wiping the dripping sweat. I was able to take some pictures that I was satisfied with, but I couldn't compare them to the close range I took at "Rocky Wildlife Park" (zoo).

Rocky Wildlife Park

Cynomolgus monkey

Standing at the tip of the boat. I found a proboscis monkey on a tree. "It's a female" That long-nosed "Proboscis Monkey" Where is (Proboscis monkey in Malay)? Climb the tree gently from behind the tree with its long tail and white butt. The monkey looked over here. Take a picture. Ah! Jumped.

It's in the shadow of a tree. It's a good chance to turn to this side, but the timing of wiping the sweat that flows out is bad. It was Next, the aim of "jump" is too late, and I miss a photo opportunity. Sweat all over the body due to impatience and heat. The camera slips due to the sweat of the hands. The lens for 400m struggles on a swaying boat. The monkey was gone when the timing was a little right.

The Garama River basin, one of the tributaries of the Clears Wetlands southwest of KK. This wetland area is a mixture of seawater and freshwater, and buffaloes are also grazing. Finally, we set out on a cruise to explore the Borneo endemic proboscis monkey.

    Sapi Island

The best spot for snorkeling. You can enjoy coral reefs and fish near the beach.

  Sulu Island

It's an empty Island, but the view from the boat is beautiful. There are shooting spots around the Island.

Tunku Abdul Rahman Park

   Manukan Island

You can enjoy snorkeling on the long and narrow beach. You can't see the fish being fed by tourists and swimming freely. The transparency is not good enough. If possible, please prohibit feeding.

A marine protected area consisting of five large and small Islands, just 30 minutes from the center of town. With all the snorkeling equipment set, the charter boat heads for the Island in front of us.

     Gaya Island

There are no tourists when we visit. It's not a very attractive Island for me. Speaking of Borneo, I feel that the forest is 90% and the sea is 10%. A trip to rediscover animals and plants in the great outdoors is your chance to get to know Sabah.

Visit to nursing home

SARI MENGASIH CENTER

A child with cerebral palsy found "Rie" who visited for the first time in a long time, expressed joy with his body and jumped at it. What a nice smile. Rie is also a Japanese who teaches painting and makes seaweed rolls at the annual bazaar and cooperates greatly with the operation of the facility by selling them.

Visited a nursing home with the introduction of Rie Hirota from the Tourism Bureau of Sabah. Although it is a facility consisting of 100 people, only some students go to school because it is during the summer vacation. As a souvenir, I donated computer game software from the Osaka US Lions Club to which I belong.

In Malaysia, when a disabled person is born to a family, everyone is willing to cooperate so that the family can support each other and support this treasure as if they were given the treasure. I hope that the day will come when as many students as possible can work with healthy people.

The facility manufactures many products under the guidance of the teacher. Designing packages for chocolate companies, woodworking products, bread production, etc. A bright and polite student carrying a physical handicap. I am impressed by how positively I am doing my best.

A cheap dinner of 300 yen per person is enough. There are a lot of high-class ingredients even if it is 10 times that. No matter how prosperous the store is, it closes at 10 o'clock. Before the holidays, it transforms into a busy city until morning. Rie, Sakamoto, and Rin, who got along with me every night. Thank you.

Epilogue

This is my first experience of such a luxurious trip. From ship reservations to car arrangements. And everything is OK in Japanese. This also expands the circle of friends. A trip to Borneo to the fullest. I think I've eaten all the delicious food in Kota Kinabalu, but I don't have enough days in a week.

Yoshimasa Ikeuchi, a traveling iron man

There is not enough film for roadside cynomolgus monkeys, cute goats and grazing buffaloes. Borneo doesn't convey its charm unless you touch and see the jungle. You can hear the breath of nature by taking the plunge and feeling the mountain surface directly.

I was impressed to find an unexpected proboscis monkey in the Garama River. For the first time, I hear the voice of a bird and the bark of a Proboscis monkey in the silence of the jungle. I am impressed to meet the creatures of nature that exceed my expectations.

The image of the jungle was damaged due to modernization. I knew it was a big Island, but there was no laid-back mood peculiar to the Island. I felt very familiar with the friendliness of the mackerel.

Meals take 3 to 4 hours to talk. People are nurtured in the first encounter. I walked through different lives and suddenly stopped and looked at my feet. I'm dissatisfied, but it may be my own world.
